What's new 11/17/09
by Joanne Frazer

This week John and Wonder were able to plant all the strawberry starts. Yeah! There are 5 beds, 2 rows per bed, 100 feet long which hold almost 1,000 plants! We put them in a different area of the garden so this season we'll be able to have weed-free rows (or at least, easier to weed rows).

John has really been keeping up on the cultivation. Good thing, 'cuz this has been such great weather for growing. The lettuces in one area are not growing as well as in the other beds primarily because the sun now comes up behind some trees. But, they will be ready at some point don't you worry!

John and Andy put covers on the daikon and radishes down at the Mallory House field. Andy also planted more turnip and daikon beds. John seeded trays of lettuce and asian greens.

The hen chicks are sooooo cute! The Polish ones' topknots are really starting to show. We found out they aren't as good of layers as some of the other breeds but they sure will look great. John's thinking about keeping some of this year's hens in order to have enough eggs to sell. The hens are on a new diet...potatoes! John read articles that recommend feeding chickens cooked potatoes so that's where a lot of our #2 potatoes are going. They have access to another part of the field and they are very happy hunting for insects. I guess you could say they're on a meat and potato diet! (or at least a protein and potato diet)

The meat birds are getting huge fast. They sure do eat alot! They're going through a bag of feed a day! Be sure to let us know if you want to buy one. They'll be ready around the middle of December. The Cluck Bucks are $20 each (good for one bird).

Finally, guess what plant we sell that can be a spice, a herb, or a vegetable?
