What's new 3/17/2009
by Joanne Frazer

Well, we had great success in planting all the onion starts. We were able to plant 7 beds. Last week I told you 1200 onion starts; apparently that was per bed! So, it makes around 10,000 onions when added to the other ones planted earlier. Hopefully, that will be enough for all your box orders! A big thank you to Andy and Jody. They made preparing and planting go smoothly and quickly.

This is going to be such a great year. We have strawberries already showing up; no don't think you'll be getting them in your boxes next week! They are about 1/4'' long and green right now. But, before long we'll have them for sale! The garlic is looking good. Jody & I used a couple bags of mushroom spent substrate as mulch on them. It looks so nice and neat! The raspberries are shooting up and filling their old bed out nicely. The cover crop on the southside of the house is growing well. The birds are back and gathering nest building material.

John put two rows of potato seedlings in. These are the ones I told you he started from seed rather than using seed potatoes. It'll be fun to watch them grow! He also sowed lettuce, parsley and basil in trays. He's been using a new watering system for the trays and everything is doing very well. They're all strong and healthy.

Oh by the way, we discovered why it's called 'spring' lamb! The other day we were watching the sheep eating away and all of a sudden a lamb jumps straight up in the air just like it had springs for legs! It was so funny! They love to jump, kick up their heels and run around. They really know how to live!
