What's new 3/03/09
by Joanne Frazer

well, we're back after a wonderful visit with John's mom. We were able to bring down fresh vegetables, eggs, spaghetti sauce that we canned ourselves last summer, and ground lamb (everything from our own farm) to cook and share with her.

Luckily, most of our covered beds held up during the windstorm. The big hoop house came through fine (except for the ends which do need a little loving attention). All the animals cared about was getting their food on time so John was out during the rain collecting delicious weeds to supplement their hay! What a guy!

John and Jodie seeded trays of broccoli, kale, cabbage, spinach and lettuce. They transplanted out nappa cabbage and pak choi. Plus, Jodie was kind enough to plant some trays with flower seeds for me. This year, I really want to grow lots and lots of flowers! So, are you imaging flower shares in your future? Is anyone interested in getting bouquets of flowers as an extra when getting your boxes? If you are, then please let me know so I know I'm on the right track!

John also planted out some Stockton Red onions from last year so he can collect the seeds this year for planting next year! (That sure was a fun sentence to write.) We tried to order seeds for these wonderful onions this year but we were not able to locate them anywhere. It seems the seed companies have come out with some new varieties and stopped growing the Stockton Reds. That onion is one of John's favorites and he had planned on growing his own seed anyway but now it's even more important for him to do so since we don't know if they'll ever come back in favor. It really brings home the need to practice seed saving!

Thank you for everyone for your kind remarks regarding our new email system and website. It's very exciting for us and we're encouraged by your response. We'll be adding photos, more recipes and links soon so check it out every once in awhile. Please keep us in mind when you try out any new recipe or have an old favorite as we welcome any recipe or vegetable cooking tips that you can send us.

Oh by the way, happy Square Root Day! (March 3, 2009 = 3 X 3 = 09). I couldn't resist putting it in here once I saw it in the news today! They mentioned people cutting their root vegetables into squares for dinner! Sounds great, huh?!
