What's new 6/16/09
by Joanne Frazer
Well, the excitement is over. Julie is now a high school graduate. My brother, sister-in-law and nephew were able to come down and visit with us for the weekend. It's always great to have them here. As I've said before, they are excellent cooks! Tom made us pork chops in a fennel, onion, tomato, and lemon peel sauce. He also made stuffed zucchinis using beef and sausage for the stuffing. Vicki made us strawberry crepes for dessert. I have to find a way to get them to stay here longer!
The deer have figured out a way to get into the garden and have eaten some of the strawberry plants. Not too many, luckily! John's been tightening up the fence so hopefully they'll stay out. But how do you keep them out when they know how good the strawberries are!! By the way, they're getting even sweeter, now!
Just last night, we ate the first cucumber of the season! It won't be long until they'll be included in your boxes! I forget just how magical this time of year is. Everything is growing. All the plants in the greenhouse are almost twice as big as last week. Most of the vegetables we seeded into trays last week have sprouted. There were only 3 kinds of lettuce and 1 cabbage variety that didn't germinate. I know the lettuce didn't come up because I tried using seeds from a few years ago. I thought about throwing them into the chicken coop and watering it, just to see if any of it comes up. But then, I'd have to figure a way to keep the chickens out of it until it's time.
John was able to mow the front yard last weekend. Now, the sheep will have hay for a while. Speaking of hay, one of our customers just bought a new scythe, used it to cut his yard and then brought it over to us. A few days later, a neighbor of his called up to say, he too, had some hay to give us. This is another example of why we live on the coast. Co-operative farming at it's finest!
John's been preparing beds and watering. Right now, he can only water 2-3 beds each morning and evening. Our well needs time to recover. Hopefully, he will be able to work on our pump system for the spring. We are very aware of how much water is needed and are thankful we have a source to tap into.
