What's new 2/24/2009

Hi Everyone, hooray for the rain! Isn't this wonderful! I just love a good old-fashioned winter storm, don't you? Especially when I'm inside! I wish I had my camera yesterday for lunch, when I went from my office to the house. John was in all his raingear, sitting on a chair outside in the garden, taking a small break from transplanting. I told him, he was suppose to do that when it's sunny and certainly not during a break in the storm. Farming sure does keep you in touch with the weather!
The big news for this week is that we will NOT do boxes this Friday. We are waiting one week in order to allow the lettuces, greens, and turnips time to grow. They do need a little longer to grow in the winter. So, thank you for your understanding. Plus, it will give us a chance to visit with John's Mom in San Francisco (which lets John have some rest, too)!
Over the past weekend John prepped, tilled, shaped, laid new driptape, and covered 4 beds with biodegradable mulch. I even help with the mulch on Sunday! I also attacked the ivy that has taken over a lath-house my father built years ago. You can't even tell it's there. We want to move the mushrooms into that area 'cuz they are getting over-heated in the greenhouse and production has slowed way down. That's why we didn't have any for sale last week.
John & Jody were able to transplant 2 beds of onions, 1 1/2 beds of diakon and turnip. They also seeded 11 more trays (enough for 2 beds) of beets and 9 trays (enough for 1 bed) of diakon and turnips. You might have noticed, we're ALWAYS seeding more trays! Although, at some points during the year we do even more, it is something that is a constant part of farming.
John & I just returned home from a bio-dynamic lecture in Glen Ellen. There is just so much to learn about this system. It's all very intriguing and it really stretches the mind to comprehend all the forces at work at any given moment. I was able to begin to understand how such cosmic forces as the sun and moon work on plants and weather. We'll be doing some experiments of our own and we'll report on them to you.
We are experimenting with a new way to send emails (our old way having run afoul of too many spam catchers.) If you get this message, and don't feel badly about sending us a quick comment -- use the above button -- to let us know you received this, we would be appreciative.
If you haven't explored our new website, please do. We have posted three favorite recipes just to make you hungry for next week's box!
