What's new 2/17/09
by Joanne Frazer

Hello Everyone, well, I guess you all got some rain over the weekend! That's fantastic! Our garden is sure loving it (as is our well)!

John and I had a wonderful time up in Portland. We caught up on a lot of sleep plus visited with my brother and sister. John went out dancing two nights alone 'cuz I had fallen asleep early. But, I did get a chance to dance on Saturday night. It was great fun. John liked it so much, he stayed until 5AM at the Sunday night all-night milonga!!! It's amazing what a little rest will do for that man!

Although, he sure is happy to be back home and eating good food again. He was not a happy camper up there 'cuz he couldn't get his fill of fresh, local vegetables! We're so spoiled!

Our heartfelt thanks go out to Marty and Jody who took care of all the animals and plants while we were gone. Jody also did some more potatoe seed (900 or so) sowing while we were up there.

Everything looks so great. The turnips that were planted in the high tunnel are beautiful! The leaves are full and best of all without bug holes!!! One benefit of winter growing and high tunnels. The turnips themselves have awhile longer to grow before they're big enough to eat. So you have something to look forward to!

John just ordered 1,000 pounds of seed potatoes  for our joint potato planting venture. We found a place in Maine that sells organic certified seed potatoes for a great price so we're very excited about it. We had to order more than we have space to plant so we'll let you know if we have extras in case some of you want to try growing your own!

Quite a few or our hens are laying now so we definitely will have eggs for sale from now on.

This week's boxes will have:

2 lettuce
chard or kale
fennel
brassicas: broccoli or brussel sprouts or cabbage

additional greens
additional brassicas

Extras:

cilantro $1.50/bunch
parsley $1.50/bunch
thyme $1.50/bunch
Eggs $6.00/dozen
Mushrooms $3/bag (no guarantees on how many will be available)

You can pick your box up here at the farm on Friday between 3PM and dusk. If you can't make it then we'll leave your box out on a table either under the canopy or in the little shed in front of the garage. You can leave your payment (wrapped in your box list slip) either in your old box or in the little yellow bowl in the shed. You can then pick it up anytime over the weekend.

And, remember you can save the box rental fee by bringing your own bags to transfer your produce!
