What's new 3/24/09

Isn't this a fantastic time of year! We're feeling energized and enthusiastic about planting and working with the earth after our winter hibernation (even though John doesn't hibernate he still slows down during the winter). It's really cool to feel in sync with the plants, birds, and animals. Trees are budding, the grass is turning green, flowers are starting to bloom. Yesterday, as I was leaving work, I had my first sighting of two blue jays. They looked so pretty with their blue wings amongst the green leaves!
We learned a lot at the 'plant by the moon calendar' class. It was held at the Benziger Winery, which is a beautiful biodynamic vineyard. We're planting and cultivating on the designated days as much as we can. It's very interesting and helps stretch our minds.
During the last week, John seeded more trays of lettuce. We are impressed by how strong and healthy the seedlings are. The bottom watering really has helped and maybe using the planting calendar has made a difference, too. He planted 2 beds of lettuce seedlings, 2 rows of turnips, and 3 rows of the potatoes that he started from last year's seeds. He said when he accidentally pulled one loose from the cell soil; it had little tiny potatoes already started on it. We can't wait to see how this works. Jody cultivated and mulched the new raspberry beds along the south side of the house (the ones you can see from the bridge). John also prepped the beds for the spring broccoli. I seeded trays of sunflowers, snapdragons, and scabiosa. I also got some dahlia bulbs that are unmarked so it'll be a very pleasant surprise when they flower. I'm very excited about planting the front yard in flowers this year. Keep your eyes on our progress!
Please call us if you are unable to pick up your box on Friday afternoon. The weather is warming up and the produce wilts. It makes us sad when our produce is not at it's best when you get it. Thank you.

Our new website continues to grow. We have posted four favorite recipes just to get you thinking about what to do with next week's box! NoyoHillFarm.com If you have some special recipes you are willing to share, please send 'em in.
