What's new 3/31/09
by Joanne Frazer

Things are really starting to take off here on the farm! Everything is loving this sunshine. But, boy that wind over the weekend was sure something! Our hoophouse held up well and most of our covers stayed on the low tunnels. But anything that wasn't nailed down wound up flying across the yard. One more good reason to have the deer fencing up, huh?!

Quite a few of you asked us about the vegetables we put in your boxes last week. The yellow round roots are the turnips! Not beets! They're another one of the salad turnips varieties that John's trying out. We think they're delicious! You can eat them raw (shredding them and adding them to a salad) or you can steam, braise, or roast them. You can add them to soups, stews, or pilafs. The other root vegetable was celeriac or celery root. Again, peel off the skin and use in any of your recipes that call for celery. It has a wonderful, mild, almost nutty flavor that really adds a special something to anything you cook.

I've put some cooking ideas (including how to cook fennel) on our website. Plus some links to recipes on the web. Let me know of any sites you regularly use and I'll put a link in for others.

John's been very busy (when is he not?). He transplanted leeks, 1 bed of beets, 2 beds of kale, and 1 bed of chard. He direct seeded 3 beds of spinach, 3 beds of cabbage, and 3 beds of broccoli. I was able to seed 6 trays of lettuce for my salad mix and 5 more trays of flowers. John cultivated some of the beds. He rototilled a section of our front hillside as preparation for my new flower beds. I'm soooooo excited about getting those in that I can hardly wait to get out there!

Our little friends the gophers are back! They are sampling the onions and garlic, right now. John put out four traps so we'll see how they like that!! He's also on the lookout for voles since it's hard to tell which little creature is actually doing the damage. A friend of ours made us an owl box but it's too late in the season to put it up. But, next year we'll invite some natural predators to take care of the furry little things!

Please put your phone number in the comments section when you order so we can call you if you don't pick up your box on Friday afternoon. The weather is warming up and the produce wilts. It makes us sad when our produce is not at it's best when you get it. Plus, we will have to charge you for the box whether or not you pick it up. Thank you.

You can pick your boxes up from 3:00-6:00PM on Friday, here at our farm. Thank you for your continued support.
