What's new 4/21/09
by Joanne Frazer

Once again I have to say: Isn't this weather incredible?! All our plants love this warm sunshine. John's getting a farmers tan and I even was able to get out and enjoy it. The fragrance from the fava beans in the south field is fantastic! Theyre in bloom now and the bumblebees are out and about. The swallows are back in their home. I just wish I had made more houses for them (I wonder where their children live?).

I love the longer days. This week, I've been able to work in the garden after my office closes. It really helps to wind down and relax. Plus, I get to hear all the birdcalls. It's really cool!

John and Andy cut grass and tilled about 1/2 of the field down at the Mallory House lot. They also fertilized part of it. Mike, a neighbor of Tom's (the Wages Creek site owner) was able to plow and disc the potato field. Now, it has to rest a bit before we plant.

John's been able to continue making compost using the spent brewer's grain, coffee grounds, kitchen vegetable waste, spent mushroom straw, and garden waste. It's a hot mix and is composting fast. By doing this, we will be able to fertilize from our own farm. Plus, we won't have to pay for compost! He transplanted bush beans. Planted 6 rows of early potatoes and one row of peas. He seeded trays of bush beans on Friday and they've already sprouted! Our greenhouse is full of seedlings. Almost all of the benches are covered and he even has trays underneath on the ground. We have some big transplanting days in our future!

Least you think I just sit under the canopy drinking mint juleps as John works in the garden, I weeded 5 1/2 flower beds and spread some of the spent brewer's grain around the herb garden. It's starting to look pretty nice, now. Some of the flowers are blooming and the dahlias have sprouted! It's so wonderful! Ask to have a look when you come by to get your boxes. That way you will see the progress throughout the season.

The hens are into laying eggs now, although three of them are starting to get broody. We'll have to wait to see if it's time to get some fertile eggs for them to incubate. They are so happy because they've been getting lots of 'bon-bons' (that's what I like to call the snails I give them). They look like they're playing a game of rugby when I throw one in, a hen grabs it, and the others chase her around trying to get it. John goes in to their yard, turns over boards, and watches them devour earwigs and sowbugs. He says they'd win typing contests 'cuz they're so fast at hunting and pecking. There's so much entertainment here on the farm!
