What's new 05/05/09

Hello from beautiful Southern California! My birthday present to Julie was/is to take her to Disneyland. We left after her work on Sunday, drove down, stayed two nights in a Disney hotel and now are driving back home. Meanwhile, back on the farm John has been very busy. He even stayed seeded flats of green beans, winter squash, and fennel (seed type plants) until 10PM Sunday night!! Maybe he was bored without me around, ya think?!
Earlier in the week he moved compost, tilled, laid out the biodegradable black covering, put in the drip lines then transplanted eggplant, peppers and cucumbers in the hoop house. He and Andy transplanted the lettuces (in the rain!). They patched the fences down at the Mallory house.
Something wonderful is happening! You know how neighbors bring something yummy to each other. Well, our neighbors bringing John some cow pies! She moved in two horses and came over to ask John if he could use the manure. Only here on the farm would someone welcome and get excited about any kind of pies!
Remember last week when you were picking up your boxes and I had some strawberries in flats but I didnt want to sell them because they had white around their shoulders? We had picked them because they would have gotten ruined by the rain. Well, I put them in the washroom until I could deal with them. On Sunday, I took them out to cut them up to freeze and they all had turned completely red! Wow! I guess thats how they do it when they send them to stores. They werent as sweet as the ones that ripen on the plant but theyre definitely better than anything you can buy at the store. I was able to freeze quite a few. As soon as the rain stops and the sun starts shining again, then well have more to sell to you.
