What's new 05/12/09

Wow, this week we certainly got a lot done! John, Anna and I weeded 7 beds of onions. That might not sound so difficult but we had to be very careful around the onion plants 'cuz they have shallow roots that do not like to be disturbed. There were some very aggressive weeds such as morning glory and chickweed. The good thing is the chickens liked getting some greens thrown into their yard! I must say the garden looks so much nicer without those weeds!
John also fertilized and tilled more beds in the back beds. He also mowed down the cover crop that was on the south side of the house. It had grown to be almost 5' tall! That's quite a lot of green manure going back into the ground! He planted some trays of cabbage. He also put the ends of the high tunnel up again. That will keep the cold air off of the cucumbers, zucchinis, eggplant and chile peppers that are planted in there. (doesn't it make your mouth water to hear about what's out there!). He went up to the Wages Creek potato patch and tilled about acre and then trenched about 4 furrows (250' long). For some reason, he stoppedit's hard for me to believe he got tired! I always think he's like the Energize bunny and just keeps going and going.maybe he is human after all!! He and Andy got the fence patched up down at the Mallory House. Now, the deer won't come in for a free lunch!
I need to correct verbiage in last week's newsletter. I said our neighbors gave us 'cow pies' which isn't true. They have horses not cows. So, they are sharing their 'field apples' with us! Which John is turning into wonderful compost.

Next week since John will be in Denver for a tango festival and I dont have help to do the picking we wont have boxes for sale for the Memorial Day weekend. So, you might want to order extra this week.
You can pick your boxes up from 3:00-6:00PM on Friday, here at our farm. If you can't make it during those hours, then we'll leave your box on the table either under the canopy or in the little shed in front of the garage. You can leave your payment wrapped in your box slip in your old box. Please call us to let us know if you won't be able to pick it up by Saturday.
