What's new 05/19/09

No boxes this week. If you are interested in getting eggs or strawberries then please email or call us at 964-3750. The strawberry plants are growing big and have lots of flowers so we're excited about having enough for everyone this year. I'm not sure how many baskets of ripe strawberries we'll have for this weekend so please contact me in advance if you want any.
John's been so busy getting everything ready before he leaves for Denver! He planted beds of cabbage, cauliflower, dino kale, collards, Nappa cabbage, Pak Choi, and spinach here at our farm. He's trying a new kind of kale called Portuguese Kale. I can't wait to try it. He also planted the kale and collards with more distance between them to see if that will make bigger, better plants.
He and Andy transplanted tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, beans and squash at the Mallory House location. John had started the beans and squash in pots on May 3rd. He used his own compost for the potting mix and they were ready in 2 weeks! That's amazing!
On Saturday, we went up to the Wages Creek location and planted 650 pounds of seed potatoes on 1/2 acre. We had help from Sakina, Veronica, Anthony, Mary Ellen, and Tom. They worked on Friday to cut up a lot of the potatoes. So, by the time I got there it was down to 6-8 bags. The rows were almost twice as long as they are here and I bet John thought he'd never get to the end! We had a tractor break up the soil but John had to go over it with our smaller walk behind tractor to get it smoothed out and then went back over it to make the furrows. Tom got to try his hand at it, too! We still have an area to plant so maybe we'll put in some rows of carrots since it's always better to plant potatoes and carrots in land that is new to growing.
John & I took a ride down to Elk to look at some pastureland that a friend has offered us to use for our sheep. There's 16 acres of good grass and wild radish that I'm sure the sheep will really enjoy being down there! We'll be able to enlarge the herd and do some selective breeding with this bigger space. It's so exciting to be working with others!
We have a new addition to the farm! Shebaa (daughter of EEWEE) had her first lamb! He's completely black and might even have brown wool. We'll have to wait and see what grows in. If you remember, Baa-Baa had a black lamb but then her wool grew in white. But both Shebaa and Eewee have dark wool so maybe the newbie will too!
Have a safe and fun weekend!
