What's new 06/09/09
by Joanne Frazer

Wow, what nice balmy weather we've been having lately, huh? This sure is great for transplanting! John's constantly amazed at how well things are growing this year.

I was able to weed the kale and chard beds. They are able to breathe now and have already shown great improvement!

Our first planting of potatoes is already knee high! John hilled them and sprayed them with compost tea, which is good for fertilizing and fungus suppression. The Wages Creek potatoes have sprouted. Tom and Mary Ellen were able to get a rotating drip line system installed. We've been eating some feral potatoes that we find when we weed. I can't wait for the first beds to be ready for digging!

John and I planted trays of broccoli, turnips, beets, celeriac, fennel, green beans, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, and lettuce. I really have to get out there and take a picture of the greenhouse. All the tables are filled with trays. It's really something to see!

John transplanted lettuce, chard, and our fennel seed plants (these are a special variety that do NOT grow bulbs, instead the seeds are harvested for use in cooking) here at the farm. He also direct seeded/planted carrots and potatoes down at Little River. That garden sure is looking different lately.

The new little lamb is in his 'spring' phase. He's jumping up and down and running all over the field. He's such a joy to watch! We get a chuckle out of some of the others when they literally climb up on one another to get the feed from their feeder. It's amazing the lengths they'll go to in order to eat some fennel or wild radish plants!

The big news is this Friday my daughter will be graduating from FB High School. The graduation starts at 5PM so if you could either pick your boxes up before 4:30PM or pay by 'Greens Bucks' or check (made out to John Richardson) and leave it wrapped by your box slip in the little yellow bowl in the shed. You can leave cash but so far we don't have a secure system in place. Please call us if you want to make other arrangements. Thanks!
