What's new 06/30/09
by Joanne Frazer

What a fantastic week! I loved the warm weather over the weekend! I must admit that I like the coastal heat far better than the inland heat, though. John and I went to Navarro to get our new truck and it was 97degrees! We were happy to get back home and be in the high 60's. Yes, you read right. We have a new addition to our fleet. One of our fellow vendors had an older diesel truck (it even has a camper shell with shelves for produce boxes already on it) that he sold to us at a very reasonable price. Now we get to give it a really good cleaning (it's been sitting for quite some time) and polish it up. It'll be so nice to use it to take everything (in one trip) to market tomorrow.

John, of course, has been busy over this last week transplanting lettuce, beets, turnips, scallions, and leeks. We spent some time on Sunday digging up our garlic bed. John's very pleased with how it did this year. We'll save about a third of it as seed for next year but we should have it available for boxes for quite a while. He and Andy planted more potatoes at the Mallory House. I went down and took some pictures so soon I'll get them on the website so you can see what we're doing. We're still having trouble with little bunnies! They really like the carrots and the popcorn seedlings, maybe because they're smaller than the other plants. John sprayed what was left of the carrots with a foul smelling substance that's supposed to deter them. Hopefully, it'll work! Our flour corn is doing very well. John's happy 'cuz it's 'knee high by the 4th of July'. I guess that's some Iowa corn measurement that indicates great corn to come!

The word from Wages Creek is the potatoes are continuing to florish. Tom's has developed into quite a committed farmer! It does grow on you, you know!

Oh, please notice that I stand corrected in regards to the onions. John alerted me that we are not selling 'spring' onions any longer 'cuz it's now summer. So, you will have fresh (what's in a name afterall) onions in your boxes this week.
