Whats New 07/14/09

You know, I could really get used to this wonderful weather! Wasn't last weekend great! But, as I look out the window, I'm seeing a lot of gray right now. Oh well, as long as it's nice and sunny some of the summer I'm happy and John's happy when it's foggy.

John's been the busy bee again. He prepared beds and then transplanted fennel, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflowers. He seeded trays of lima beans and green beans. The bad news is that the moles have been active in our spinach, kale and nappa cabbage beds. He noticed the plants were not looking good which is unusual 'cuz he's been watering them all regularly. Upon closer inspection, he noticed they had burrowed around the roots, which expose them to air, so they can't absorb water. He was able to step in around the spinach and they've responded well. It seems we've lost the entire nappa cabbage crop, though. We're still waiting to see what happens with the kale. It's very disappointing to go to all that trouble and then have the little pests ruin the crop! We'll definitely be keeping a closer watch on the beds from now on!

Speaking of pests, we haven't caught a rabbit at the Mallory House for 3 days! I'm hoping this means they've decided it isn't worth the danger and are looking for food elsewhere. Although, we are getting gopher nibbles but John's good at trapping them.

The exciting news is that the first eggplants are forming, the peppers are fruiting, and we have lots of green tomatoes! The cucumbers are increasing their production so very soon you'll have wonderful summer veggies in your boxes!

The other night, John and I were startled awake by noise on the front porch. There was quite a ruckus going on. John went down to investigate it (he's so brave). Apparently, a deer went through the deer fencing we had put up to block the porch from the walkway. It got tangled up in it, ran into a small wooden box, and finally got freed up and ran back up the driveway! I'm just glad that it didn't run into the garden instead of down the road! Never a dull moment here on the farm!
