What's new 07/21/09

Wow, everything is growing so fast! The seedlings we planted just a couple weeks ago are ready to be planted out into the garden, the potato plants up at Wages Creek are 3' tall, and the corn at Mallory House is tasseling. This is going into such an abundant time!
John planted trays of sugar snap peas, green beans, broccoli, and winter broccoli. We transplanted beets and fennel. Plus, direct seeded carrots. We have LOTS of carrots in differing stages and I'm really looking forward to eating some this year. We're planting them in different areas and covering some beds so hopefully the little rust flies won't find them. I dug up 3 beds of onions with more to go!
Yesterday I took Julie down to her UCSC orientation and was surprised to see a CSA offered to students. What a great idea. Now all my kids have to do is learn how to cook!
We had two visitors from British Colombia over the weekend. They are a young couple that is bicycling around the USA. They are stopping at farms along the way in order to find out how people are growing food so they can go back home and start farming themselves. They spent two nights camped out back. They are very interested in raising organic produce and helped dig a bed of onions by themselves. Then they headed off to Yorkville. Eventually, they will end up in Vermont. Amazing, isn't it?
