What's new 07/28/2009

Well, you know that it's really hot somewhere East of us don't you! I hope the people living in Willits and Ukiah appreciate the air conditioning that we coasties are providing for them. It does seem a little strange for us to experience winter weather in July and summer weather in January! But, the lettuce and spinach sure do like the foggy weather so I guess I can't really complain too much. I can always add a layer to keep warm!
This is an extremely busy time of year for us. We've been planning and planting for the Fall/Winter season plus trying to keep up with all the summer chores. We really miss all the helpers we had last year. It sure makes us prioritize what gets done and when. We transplanted beans and peas here at our place. (It's so nice to be able to eat veggies that are cover crops. That way both the soil and us benefit. What a wonderful win-win situation!) John also transplanted some sunflowers that we can harvest for seed. Plus, I snuck in some sunflowers that I can use in arrangements, too. Now all I have to do is find a place for them in my flower garden! We started more lettuce and greens in trays. John's been busy clearing out old beds. Hopefully, that will help cut down on the vole population. He dug up most of the potato beds here. It's so great to be able to eat as many potatoes as we want and let me tell you that's A LOT! (remember John's Irish!)
We also went down to the Mallory House piece. We weeded and cultivated the carrot beds. I transplanted the rest of the beets. John and I transplanted fennel. John and Andy finished covering the hoop house. Andy used the walking tractor to rototill a few more beds. Almost everyday, there's a rabbit in the trap. They have really done quite a bit of damage to the bean crop and some of the carrots are eaten. John sprayed all around the perimeter with some bunny deterrent and hopefully that will stop them from entering. Now, all we have to do is catch the ones who are living IN the garden area. The good news is the winter squash are really doing well there. I was amazed to see how big the corn is getting, too! I've never grown corn before so it was neat to see the little tassels pushing out. They're really interesting and beautiful plants!
I found some interesting vegetable recipes in my old 'Joy of Cooking' book and will put them on the website soon. So be sure to look there occasionally for updates.
