What's new 08/04/2009

Wow, just when I had given up on the weather, we get summer! You'd think that someone who's lived her whole life on the coast would remember that July means fog but that we do get some incredibly wonderful days in the following months. I now have to learn to appreciate every day no matter what the weather brings!
We got so much work done over the weekend. We planted trays of lettuce, celery, celeriac, nappa and regular cabbage, cauliflower, fennel, chard, lima beans, green beans, and spinach! WOW! Is your mouth watering yet?! John also transplanted some sugar snap peas and some sweet corn. The corn I've been talking about in past newsletters has been flour corn or popcorn. We'll see how this goes and maybe next year we can plant some larger areas. Wouldn't that be great!
The gophers are really active right now. They're tunneling in the strawberry beds, messing with the beets, and entering into the kale beds. They also have discovered the potato plants up at Wages Creek. I have a theory about the Chinese zodiac and the proliferation of rodents this season, since it is the Year of the Rat! So, it should get better in a few months.
The bunnies are still active down at the Mallory House. I guess all those stories about rabbits are true 'cuz we sure are catching a lot of them. We really will have to work on better fencing next year!
The flea beetles are doing quite a bit of damage on everything that is leafy green. They especially like the collards and Portuguese kale. I guess we'll have to cover everything to protect them. It makes it harder to cultivate and weed, though. I still want to put in more hoop houses, too. All it takes is time!
But, on a positive note! The winter squash at the Mallory House is getting big. The carrots are almost ready. We ate a few last night and they were good but will get sweeter during the next couple of weeks. The eggplants are looking good and the tomato plants have lots of fruit on them. The beets and fennel are thriving, too.
Our strawberry plants are taking a little rest right now. So, there will be only a limited supply available for a little bit. Go ahead and order some but I'm not sure how many we'll be able to put in your box.
Exciting news! The Coast Cinema will be showing the movie 'Food, Inc' twice a day (6:45PM and 9PM) for one week starting this Friday. It's about how food is raised and processed in the USA. Be sure to thank Tom and Maxine for making it available to all of us here on the coast. You can get more information on the movie by going to: http://www.foodincmovie.com/.
