What's new 08/18/09
by Joanne Frazer

Isn't this a wonderful time of year?! The summer vegetables are going strong, the late summer crops are ripening, and the fall crops are just around the corner. It is such an abundant season! Everything is so tasty and delicious.

The sheep have adjusted to their new home. John went down on Sunday before the Elk tango session to bring them food so that they will associate food with him and come to him. They still remembered him and Baa-Baa lead them to John.

Vegan/vegetarian alert: go to next paragraph. John and Andy slaughtered three lambs. They made quite a lot of sausage, which we love. The remaining lambs are small and John will be using them for strip grazing until they get bigger. But, they are much easier to take care of and a lot less demanding.

We're very exciting because we've hired some workers who are putting a trail down our back hillside so we can install a solar pump in our spring. Then we can start to really get all our beds well watered. That's been a struggle this year for us. It'll take a lot less time to water everything so it'll free us up to do other important chores.

We're having problems with flea beetles and gophers. We'll have to put more covers on rows for a while to discourage the little buggers. I need to trap the gopher who ate one of my dahlia plants!

John and I went up to the Wages Creek property to move the water lines on Saturday. He also cut back some of the plants so they'll mature faster. They all look great! Plus, the gopher traps are working, too.

The Mallory House garden is beautiful! The carrots are ready for your boxes; which will be a welcome treat. We're still catching a rabbit a day. I am just amazed that the population hasn't been reduced yet. Oh well, we'll keep on trapping!
