What's new 9/1/09
by Joanne Frazer

Important notice! This week we will NOT be doing boxes. We will be spending most of our time preparing and planting the winter vegetable beds.

This is the time of year when we must get our winter vegetables into the ground. We sent off the clutch to the rototiller a few weeks ago to get worked on. They fixed it and sent it back BUT didn't send back a very important part. That was last week and we're still waiting for it. Luckily, Sakina has a smaller version and she lent it to us. So, we spent the weekend clearing out old beds, moving drip lines, putting out compost, rototiling, shaping, and planting. John put in some beds of carrots, beets, and beans. We have much more to get in and then we're going to take a much-needed break by going to the Denver Tango Festival over the Labor Day Weekend.

The good news is that our corn plants are thriving, the new squash plants are putting forth buds (just as the old plants are dying back), the broccoli/cauliflower/cabbages are growing strong, and the beets are taking off.

I am proud to say I caught my first gopher! It's the first time that I've done everything without John's assistance. The little bugger was heading toward my new dahlia bed and I certainly put a stop to that! I haven't caught any more but I'm hot on their trail!

I'm also collecting quite a few snails for the hens lately. It's amazing how many snails there are in my flower garden. I'll have to be more diligent on picking them. Some of my mystery dahlias are blooming now. I got the bulbs from the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens sale but they were unlabeled. So, it's kinda like Christmas in August!
