What's new 9/8/09
by Joanne Frazer
This week saw a lot of changes here. On Tuesday, John went out to open up the chickens and check on the lambs. He saw a lamb laying down by the fence. This is highly unusual...lambs do not lay down on their sides. He was concerned. Rightfully, it turns out. All five of the remaining lambs were dead. They had been attacked during the night. I found out the name and phone number of our County trapper. He came here on Wednesday. He thinks they were killed by a coyote (possibly more than one). The lambs weren't really damaged which I thought was strange. I didn't know that animals killed just for the fun of it. We were very upset at our loss but we also feel very lucky that we had moved all the adults down to Elk.
At the same time, John came down with the flu so we had to cancel our trip to Denver. At least this gives us time to do more prepping and planting which we were behind in. Plus, I was able to get one of the front flower beds extended. I've lost another dahlia to gophers BUT I also caught another one. I put out quite a few traps and some of them were tripped but empty. So, I redid them and have my fingers crossed!
John transplanted lettuces, green beans, spinach (and direct seeded some spinach) and brussel sprouts.
We're still harvesting onions. I only have 1 1/2 beds to go!
The potatoes are doing well; we'll be offering 25 pound bags for $35 as a harvest special. We'll be digging the potatoes on September 19th.
We went down and visited the sheep in Elk. Baa-Baa still leads the flock to John when he calls out her name. We brought them wild radish and alfalfa. (John thinks the Matrix is a farm vehicle! He's always stuffing it full of hay and such!) I fell in love with a beautiful young llama that is in the same field as our sheep. She's sooooo pretty! I talked to Tim (the caretaker) about maybe getting her sheared so I can spin her hair into yarn. I really have to find out if it's possible. She sure does have a lot of it!
