What's new 09/15/09
by Joanne Frazer

What a lovely little rain we had today, huh? Our newly planted seeds and transplanted seedlings are very happy right now. This is just what they needed to get going well.

John and I were not quite prepared for the showers today. We hadn't taken the onions in after Sienna and Jaime pulled them up. We always lay them on top of the ground to dry out for awhile. So, John was out there bagging them during while it was raining. I was helping my daughter, Julie, getting the side yard ready for a Mad Hatter tea party this evening. I stopped and went out to help John. We were able to get 8 bags of onions into the dry greenhouse! Yeah! They were saved!

The strawberries probably won't fare as well. They soak up the rain and get plump and soggy. We'll have to go out and pick all those off so that new ones will get started. It seems we were doing this in May, doesn't it? No wonder they call this time period the second Spring!

John has been busy cleaning up the old beds and getting them ready for the winter crops. You'll notice the field just to the South of the house has lots of carbon material from the cover crop that we grew over this last year. He tilled it all in and will till it again as soon as it breaks down more. This rain will help with that. He also transplanted brussel sprouts, chard, kale, and winter broccoli.

My lettuce mix transplants are doing well. The radishes I seeded have sprouted already. The cilantro takes a little longer and hasn't appeared yet.

We have a new nemisis in the garden. Quail! John put agribon floating row covers over the newly planted areas to protect from the little buggers. He actually caught one under the covering chopping on the carrots sprouts! Hopefully, none of the others will venture in from now on.
