What's new 09/29/09

Happy Fall! Doesn't it seem like it really IS Fall now? Don't you love it when the seasons change? We noticed the difference in where the sun is setting and the night's have been cooler. One nice thing is that we can stop working in the garden earlier 'cuz we run out of daylight!
All the crops are loving this nice weather. We still have to keep up with the weeds but it's so great to see everything thriving! John and friends cultivated the spinach, brussel sprouts, winter broccoli, kale and chard beds.
They transplanted the Fall broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, winter cabbage, and lettuce. They also planted trays of lettuce, nappa cabbage, bok choy, and pak choi.
We harvested the winter squash that was planted at the Mallory House. This was the patch we grew along with our friend Andy. We got 850 pounds! All of those from 2 rows! Just think what we can do next year when we know how well it likes it there!
This weekend we went over to Covelo to the Fall Biodynamic preparation gathering at Live Power Farm. We just love visiting with Steve and Gloria, seeing how their farm is doing, and meeting others who have the same interests as we do. We always come away with great new ideas about farming! It reenforces our desire to continue to learn about biodyanmics and substainable farming. Plus, it was nice to get away together, even if for only one night. Thankfully, our friend, Marty, was able to take care of the hens so we could relax.
I was delighted to see another one of my mystery dahlias (if you remember I got some unlabled tubers from the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens earlier in the year)is blooming! This one is yellow. It's really cool seeing color in the front yard again! I just have to figure out the watering system so they can really florish.
Speaking of watering systems, John's hired some guys to help with the spring box. They have helped to clean the hole out, put rocks into it, and are building sides. Soon they'll put a top on it so the leaves and debris won't fall in. They built a small enclosure for the pump and are working on the steps.

Here's a potato tip for you: fill a pot with whole (washed)potatoes, then pour in water to cover, put a lid on it, bring it to a boil. Let it boil for a couple of minutes. Pour out all the water. There should only be a little bit of water left on the bottom. Then, put the pot, with a lid on, back on the lowest heat (simmer). Then cook for one hour. Test to be sure they're cooked. We refrigerate them. It keeps them rather firm so that they make great hashbrowns or fried potatoes.
