What's new 10/13/09
by Joanne Frazer
Well, it looks like we are in for a pretty good storm this week. We sure do need the rain. So, get out your raincoat and boots and go enjoy the mudpuddles!
John and Wonder put in two beds of leeks and early sweet onions. This year we ordered onion starts from a catalog instead of doing it all by seed. This freed up time for John to work on getting the beds ready. The result is getting the onions into the ground earlier than we have ever done before.
Plus, John had time to work on the compost piles. Here at our farm, he used the sheep manure from the next door field. Down at the Mallory House, he and Andy composted horse manure. They added the biodynamic preps so we should be set for awhile.
We also weeded the flower beds (notice the order of importance), the carrots and the beets. John went through the kale bed and got rid of a lot of older leaves that had the imported cabbage moth on them. Now I ask you, where was Homeland Security when they let that little bug in!!!
We also took another load of old string bean plants down to our girls in Elk. I sure do like seeing them and they sure do like getting the treat!
Speaking of treats, John is refraining from making his pickles so he can put the cucumbers into the boxes. I don't know how long he'll be able to resist so enjoy them while you can!
