What's New 2/10/09
by Joanne Frazer

yeah!!! RAIN!!! Isn't this a nice rain we're having? Our garden and well sure are enjoying themselves right now! Let's hope it keeps up for awhile.

Another of our ewes lambed last weekend. Eeewee had twins! John was lucky enough to watch the whole birthing process. Both are females, with one quite a bit larger than the other. She accepted them both and is such a fine mother. She always makes sure they are near her in the field and waits for them when they go through the gates.

It is so much fun to watch all of them running, jumping, and playing together. As soon as the rejected lamb is weaned from his bottle-feeding, then we'll put him out with the rest. He's growing fast and frolics all by himself.

John and Jody prepared two onion beds (tilled them, laid out drip pipe, covered them with biodegradable black mulch) then planted out some of the onion seedlings. Then they put up a low hoop frame and covered that with slitted row covers so they will grow faster and be ready for picking early in the season.

They cleaned up the garlic and strawberry beds of weeds. The plants are growing really well.

John had saved some potato seeds from last year's crop. He planted them in seed trays just to see what would happen. To his surprise, they sprouted and are growing! He's going to transplant them out into the field and we'll have to wait and see what kind of potato they turn out to be! We didn't isolate the potato plants last year so we don't know which ones pollinated which plants! Normally, we get seed potatoes, cut them and plant them out there so we know exactly what kind we'll be harvesting. I can't wait to see what we get!

Last Saturday, we went down to the scion exchange in Boonville. We got quite a few varieties of apples, plums, and pears to try out. We also got some new root stock. John and Jody grafted some of the scions on the new root stocks. Now we have a nursery bed of apple trees. I'll keep you posted as to whether they take or not.

This week John & I are heading for Portland to go to the tango festival over the weekend so we won't be doing boxes on Friday. I guess you all will have to go on a fast for a week! But, the good news is that the garden will have a break (and John too) and so all the produce will be bigger and better when we get back!

Happy Valentine's Day to you all!
